Number Theory | Logic | Prerequisites | Registration and Policies

Students, put on your thinking cap and join MoMath’s Outreach Educator, Chaim Goodman-Strauss, online for a three-session minicourse designed to engage and challenge the brightest minds from around the country in grades six through twelve.  Chaim is one of the four researchers who most recently discovered two mathematical breakthroughs: the Hat and the Spectre.  Students will learn mathematical concepts while also benefiting from enjoying math together in small groups of talented and focused young scholars!

Number Theory minicourse

One Sunday each month, a three-month series
 
March 17, April 14, and May 19
1:00 pm to 2:30 pm ET

(for students in grades 6–12)

Primes are gaps in the number line — the numbers that aren’t multiples of other numbers.  Yet they are distributed by a mysterious law: among numbers with n digits, about one in 2.3n is prime.  We’ll explore some of the basic facts of number theory, such as Fermat’s Little Theorem (used in cryptography) and the Prime Number Theorem (just mentioned).  Put on your thinking cap and join MoMath’s Outreach Mathematician Chaim Goodman-Strauss for a three-session online minicourse designed to engage and challenge the brightest minds from around the country in grades six through twelve.  Chaim is one of the four researchers who most recently discovered two mathematical breakthroughs: the Hat and the Spectre.  Students will learn about number theory while also benefiting from enjoying math together in small groups of talented and focused young scholars.

Logic minicourse

One Sunday each month, a three-month series
 

June 16, July 14, and August 11
1:00 pm to 2:30 pm ET

(for students in grades 6–12)

Logic is fascinating and fundamental — basic to our thinking — yet, full of puzzles and paradoxes!  For example, what can we make of these puzzles below that are set on the Isle of Knights and Knaves?  (Knights always tell the truth and knaves always lie.)

  1. Alice says, “We are both knights or both knaves,” and Bob says, “One of us is a knight and one of us is a knave.”  Who is who?
  2. Alice says, “Bob is a knave,” but Bob says, “Alice is a knight.”  Who is who?

Prerequisites

To participate in this series, students must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Is a current or former student in the MoMath-BNL gifted math program
  • Is a current or former student in the MoMath Expansions gifted math program
  • Must have successfully completed the ICPS program
  • Has been admitted to MoMath’s Expansions gifted math program
  • Can demonstrate eligibility in a gifted math program, such as enrollment in a gifted-and-talented program or school

Students may register for the course if they have met at least one of the criteria above.

Registration and Policies

Payment in the form of a major credit card is required at the time of online registration.  Space is limited, and students may register on a first-come, first-served basis.  There are no refunds or credits for missed classes.

By registering, parents and students attest that the student meets the eligibility criteria for this series, and may be asked to provide further details.  Ineligible students who register will not receive a refund nor will they be permitted to attend.

MoMath will make every effort to run classes as scheduled, but occasionally severe inclement weather or other unusual circumstances beyond MoMath’s control may require that a class be cancelled.  If such a cancellation occurs, MoMath may, at its sole discretion, offer make-up sessions.

Note that the series will run only if a minimum number of participants register before the start date of the first session of the series.  In the rare event that the series is cancelled, registrants will be notified and provided with a full refund.

MoMath does not provide make-up classes for absences.  Each Extensions course accepts a limited enrollment in order to provide individualized attention to each student.  While many reasons may cause a student to miss a class, a registered student holds a reserved seat while others may be turned away due to limited capacity.  Additionally, the Museum provides staffing and other resources based on registration.  For these reasons, the Museum has a strict no-refund and no make-up policy.

All Extensions participants are expected to exhibit good behavior to ensure a positive experience for everyone.  At its sole discretion, MoMath may remove a student from the session or from the entire series for behavioral reasons.  If a student is removed for behavioral reasons, for either the day or the remainder of the program, no refund will be issued.
